H.R. Music 'n Stuff
I am a founding member of Sycamore.
Sycamore performs Christian rock and also leads in worship. The rest of the boys, minus Brian and I, are touring the
nation in their tour bus, Billy, performing wherever the hood-emblem takes them.
Music
has always been a big part of my life. When I was nine my brother gave me his
beginner guitar when he bought a better guitar off of a hitch-hiker. He showed
me about six chords, and I took it from there. In high school I formed a
Christian Rock band named Rhema. We played around at local churches and for our
own youth group. Most all of our songs were original. I also played in the
Martin High School Jazz Band. We won just about every competition we entered. I
also picked up bass, keyboard, mandolin and a little banjo while in high school.
In college I joined up with a very good friend and great keyboard player
named Alan Simmons. We played together for the youth and college at our church.
Somehow, we could always click. We wrote what we termed "Contemporary
Instrumental". This involved heavy sequencing with my Korg O1-W F/D. He
would play a piano sound along with our sequences and I would play acoustic or
electric guitar depending on the selection.

We recorded three demo songs at Patrick
McGuire Recording in South Arlington. Patrick runs it out of his house, so
he has great rates. I gave a bunch of copies of the demo to Mary Stephens, a
friend of mine who lives in Nashville. She has a contract with Warner Brothers
the last I heard under the name Stephens & Lane, a male/female duo. She gave
the tapes to various producers there. One recording company said they liked our
music and would like to hear more, but with a better defined sound. Well, the
first studio work cost us $800, and we didn't feel we could bet on another $800.
Also, Alan got married, so our music went by the wayside.
Currently, I'm taking a break from playing consistently anywhere. But I still
help write, produce and record for Sycamore.
Here I am with Yanni and John Tesh at SMU's McFarlin
Auditorium in 1989. That was a cool night. No, I wasn't playing with them, just
happened to be in the right spot at the right time and got a backstage pass.
My friend, Floyd Lambreau, who had the tickets is pictured behind me.

worked with would blow your mind. What a privilege to get to work with them. |
