I did one of the absolute stupidest things I've ever done
in my life. Could be the stupidest ever, but I don't care to go over
my history of stunts to determine if it was. As with every stupid
thing I've done, it seemed like a good idea at the time. So, here's
the story: We had a social with our church class called the Family
Olympics. Everyone and their kids competed in various competitions for
their team. The only group competition was the tug-of-war. I
really wanted to help my team, so I tried to devise a way to maximize my
pulling power for the team. Time was running out, they were about to
start, I had to think quickly.
Okay, loop the rope around the front of my wheelchair, around the
footrest...yeah, that's good. Then, I'll just push really hard in the
opposite direction and it will pull the rope for my team.
The instant the whistle blew and everyone pulled, there's that flicker of
consciousness that says, wait a minute, something isn't right. I'm
sitting there looking at our anchor-man jerk the rope taught and it threw me
and the chair straight up about 4 feet in the air. I teetered on top
of the rope for about 0.133 of a second before being catapulted out sideways
onto the floor.
Thank goodness a friend was there snapping his camera to get these shots.
And the competition went on without me, as you can see, with my chair
hanging upside down from the rope. My team lost. I think it was
in part due to the disturbance of my flying act.
Immediately after the loss, team members rushed to my aid, including my
wife who quickly asked, "did you hurt your legs?" To which I aptly
replied, "How should I know?" To which she responded by falling down
and laughing uncontrollably making everyone wonder who this lunatic couple
was. |
